stitching for the mountain

I have been working on dresses to take to the mountain with us.  Everything that I think is crucial to be sewn on the machine has been.  I now have hand stitching to do.  We get to camping or we are on the mountain and I find my hands like to be full.  I pick up embroidery or crochet.  This time I am going to have hemming to do.

I cannot wait to be on our mountain!

new beach/rowing dress

This is my newest dress for the beach and rowing.  Or running around town, especially with a sweater over it and leggings under it.  I took the pattern from the dress I bought in Florida and the fabric is a remnant I found out our local fabric store.  They cut big remnants.  I will not be able to wear it on the mountain next week but I will be able to wear it on and off all winter in Houston.  That is just the weather we get here.  It is very comfortable and I have three more remnants that I can use for this pattern.  One is silk and they all have flowers!  I have to get flowers some how!

patterns

Today was all about making patterns or receiving patterns.

I bought this little dress for wearing on the beach in Florida.  We were so ready to get out of town we forgot a few things.  We also did not know how much time we were going to spend where.  We picked up a few beach things at a local surf shop.  This dress was a find.  Years ago I had something similar from Target and I really liked it.  I actually went back to see if they had any other prints that I might like and they really did not.  I did find lovely remnants at one of our local fabric stores that are big enough to make this dress.  I took the pattern off of it and I am getting ready to make it.

I am also waiting for patterns in the mail.  This corset is one.  I have other things coming.  So much fun!  But the federal holiday did not help much.

This week is about preparing for the Small Mister's birthday.  It is going to be interesting.

failure but a cause for excitement and pondering

We have a wedding to go to this weekend that is out of state.  I found this fabric in my stash and decided to make a dress for the wedding out of it.  The fabric was enough for my normal sheath style dress but I wanted something a bit different.  The pattern I used has a lower back, three quarter length arms, and supposedly a full skirt.  But I did not have enough fabric for the skirt so I had to cut it down.

I tried the dress on before I hemmed it.  Failure!  My normal choice for size works well for a sheath dress but not well for a dress that is this fitted at the waist.  I got the shoulders and the cup size right.  The fabric was horrible to try on!  I do not think I would have made the whole wedding with it on. let alone the reception!  I should put many more exclamation points because that was how itchy the fabric felt.

The excitement and pondering come from I now have a very good idea on how I need to change the pattern to fit me.  I also have a better idea on what kind of fabric I wish to make this dress in.  This blue is pretty and looks good on me but I have to admit that I will probably go with a black or a deep burgundy.  I also was thinking I would like it in a soft wool.  Not really a stash dress at all.  I actually like the narrower skirt so I will have to think about what I want to do there.

I would love to spend the weekend working on the next version.  I am seriously thinking about making a muslin for it to just be sure.  There is going to have to be some adjustment in the bodice.  I would also love to do some fabric shopping.  I have to admit that it has been a while since I have gone to the fabric store looking for something other then thread and zippers.

But this weekend is a wedding.  And there is a quilt to work on on my machine.  I might get a chance to go to a fabric store next week to plan and ponder.  How many pennies must I safe....

a new batch of frontier dress

I was crazy the week before we left for the land.  I cut out three cotton dresses and made them.  I even double seamed them all since I am tired of the thread breaking after what I consider a too short period of time.  Does the universe not know these are supposed to last forever?  I had a few of my home work/weekend dresses become tatters recently and I needed a few more.

Even though I made them for home work, land work, garden work, I have been wearing them to the office.  I sent an email today to a friend saying I was wearing a frontier dress to work today and they may laugh.  My friend said it was not too different then my every day work wear.  Oh well.

But they are very comfortable and have pockets.  I should have made them a few inches shorter.  That way, climbing up the mountain with a Small Mister in my arms or moving logs would have been a bit easier.  I just cannot bring myself to make that cut and hem.  I know they are going to shrink even though they will not go in the dryer.  That is just the universe.  These are supposed to be indestructible!
