house warming gift

One of my co-workers had a house warming party this weekend.  I decided to put together a gift for their kitchen.

I took the time away from working on the Pixie quilt to put toghether some dish towels for them.

It was a nice break and the party was fun even though very quiet.

Mr. R can cook!  And Mrs L is a lovely hostess.  I just hope they get lots of use from these.

a brown linen dress

I finally finished the linen dress I cut out last June.  Life has that just been that full and there have that many expected babies on the way.  I have been working on quilts.  A lot.  I have a tendency to put myself on the back burner.  My family fusses.  So while I was making the Pixie's quilt, I put my dress together at the same time.

I know I am silly.  I sew a seam on a nine square and sew a straight seam.  It means I only have a few seams where I am not working on the quilt at the same time.

I chose to wear the same style a lot.  I really like it in linen.  My frontier dress.  Or very similar to a 200 Euro dress.  How very strange!

My Beloved picked out the buttons.  Red and glitter.  Something I would not have picked out for myself but I love them.

I got such complements on the buttons when I wore the dress to work on Monday.  It feels very silky and it is a huge pleasure to wear.

a cherry dress for the tall short person

My Tall Short Person had picked out cherry fabric a while back that has been sitting in my fabric pile.  We have been looking for a pattern to make with it and she found on that appealed to her from Simplicity.  It has been an amazingly long time since I made a dress from Simplicity (or with a true pattern for that matter).  I do not know if it was me or the pattern, but I am not sure I would use a Simplicity pattern again.  It is why I am not giving you the number.  Find a similar but different pattern to try.

I added some fullness in the front and back to cover the Pixie coming in November.  I had a few issues zipping her up but my Beloved did not so I figure it was just my fingers, and that I needed to secure the zipper better.  The dress fit well, but she did not like the ruffles on the straps.  I did not either.

So I took them off.  I think if I were to make this pattern again, I would not follow the directions for putting together the bodice and putting in the zipper.  I would the bodice lining to be a true lining so the zipper worked better and more of the seams were finished.  It is why I sewed it down.

With all the difficulties of sewing, it is actually a very cute dress.

more progress on the baby quilt

My Beloved was leaving as I was coming home from work tonight.  After I took a bit of rest from riding my bicycle home in 102 degree heat and getting some simple food, I sewed all evening.  The baby quilt I posted about a couple weeks back is a priority as well as getting 100 more nine squares stitched.  I have a baby shower that I must go to the beginning of September for my first grandbaby.  For some reason, I thought I would have more time.

All the strips ae done for the last baby quilt.  I have to put the top together which means ten more seams.  Then the quilting.  I have 30 nine squares done for the next quilt.  Then there will only be two more baby quilts to make.  There are always nine squares to make.

getting distracted

I needed to lay out all the nine squares to see how they would look in a baby quilt top.  Instead, I was distracted by Gary Vaynerchuk and his talk.  Pretty excellent.  Tells it like it is and is the truth for every situation.  I had to watch it so I did not get started on this quilt top as soon as I should have.  Or started drinking tea for that matter.

But I got down to it and a little bit at a time, the squares were laid out.

Until it was done.  I did find taking pictures of the quilt top seemed to help me see what it would really look like.  Photographs and tea helped.

But now it is like this again because I have to go back to my sewing machine and put it together.

Thanks Gary for the excellent distraction.  Or was the quilt the distraction (evil grin).
