more wonkiness in my life

Life has been full this autumn and winter.  I realized yesterday that it has been October since I sewed a nine square.  Between projects for Christmas and the Smallest Short Person coming into our lives, my sewing machine has been used for other things.

I asked my Tall Short Person what I should blog about last night as she was eating homemade bread and she said bread.  I laughed because for Everyday Bread I really do not use a recipe:  sourdough starter, liquid, fat, sugar,  flour.  Dump into a bowl.  Ferment for a while.  Add more flour and salt and knead.  Let rise to double twice.  Shape into a loaf.  Let rise for about an hour.  Bake at 350 degrees for a hour.  That is the recipe.  The specificity I do not have because I do not measure anymore.  Does it look right?  Does it feel right?  My family laughs at me and then they tell me it is time to start bread again.  If anyone does wish the recipe with more specifics, let me know and I will right it down.

Wonkiness.  I have been playing with more pot holders.  This one is a bit thinner then I would have wished.

But I like how it is not perfect.  It allows me to be able to wash another.  I will bring more wonkiness into my life soon.

stocking stuffer for me!

We went camping over Christmas.  We had very little cell phone reception and no internet.  Having the time outdoors and with family was quite lovely.  We actually did the unwrapping of presents before we went so we would not have to figure out how to bring it with us.

I have a formula for Christmas stockings:  socks, books, pajamas/nightgown, hat, mitts, something about tea or coffee, an ornament, and maybe something with paper.  I find that I have to do my own stockings.  Mainly because no one else in the family sews or crochets.  I make the nightgown, hat, and mitts.  My loved ones try to figure out the rest.  They could not figure out how to get the patio and firepit into my stocking.  I have not used it yet because it is really not finished but it is lovely.

As I was making nightgowns for other people (still embrodering one), I took some cotton and linen and fabric with white lace and pieced a nightgown together for myself.  I worked with what I have but I know my loved ones would not have been able to find anything similar unless it was very expensive.  Everything I like lately is 200 Euros and it is mostly online from France or Britian.

This nightgown is just lovely.

simple day of tasks

It has been a simple day of tasks.  I got half of the molasses crinckles I need to bake made.  I ran out of energy and brown sugar.  The brown sugar is fixable but the energy is not.  My Tall Short Person is a bit snotty and fighting not to get the crud.  She made the comment that Mommas cannot be sick because the short people depend on them.  I said I understood.

I did get a white linen nightgown done for my best friend.  I am going to add an embroideried mandala to it in white.  That way, if she wish to wear it to Tantric meditation, she can.  But it is a little thin, so I would hope she would wear something underneath.

a bit of wonkiness

Last night we went to a Circque du Soleil performance.  We had so much fun but by the time we got back home, I was much to tired to post.

I have been needing new pot holders or oven mitts.  After being horribly disappointed in what is available to buy, I made some.  The middles of these are felted sweaters.  I wanted a bit of wonkiness and nothing quite straight, so I did not measure anything.

This is a lot like making nine squares for me.  Very restful but also a quick project.

I like making beautiful practical things and these pot holders fit that.  I actually have some more I am making so I can wash them.  Those will be filled with scraps of batting since I ran out of sweaters.  More beautiful practicalness on the way.  It is like the quote from William Morse:  "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

the wee one likes warmth

The Smallest Short Person likes to be warm.  I made him and his Momma some extra receiving blankets because they were going through them so fast.  Even though it is unseasonally warm here, at times, he likes two.  This just means laundry does not have to be done so often.  I started with a very soft piece of flannel, 36 by 39 inches and took deep hems down the sides.  In a couple hours, I had seven new receiving blankets made.  I have fabric for two more which the Tall Short Person does not really like but they would be great for extras as Grandlady and Grandpa's house.

Here he is on one.  Playing with his momma.

Then of course there are the smiles.  Especially when he is warm and his tummy is full.  Or Grandpa is telling him stories of the dragonrider he will be and the type of sword Grandpa is going to forge him to fight Jaberwockies and protect Chupacabras.  That is Grandpa for you!
