surfboard bag

My favorite surfboard has a bag that I made for it when I first got it.  The bag is in tatters.  It was made out of upholstery fabric.  At the time, I really could not afford a manufactured surfboard bag so I made a huge drawstring bag to protect my board during transport.  Also, to give me a couple handholds for when I need to carry it.  All my favorite surfboards are much taller then I am.  My Yater Spoon is 9'6".  With the wind blowing, to the beach and back is always interesting.

Which is part of why it is in tatters.

But I had some more upholstery fabric.  We had found an 11" board that still needs a bag but since this is the one I always seem to go for in the quiver, I thought it would take precedence.  A huge drawstring bag is not a lot of seams but they do take a bit of time to sew.  Especially since I doubled everyone.

But it is done.  A brown hibiscus print.  It should be good for another ten years.  That is about how long the last one made it.

Now, if the forecast as for anything but rain and flat surf this weekend.  I may just go out for a paddle to work my shoulders.  It is a bit of a sigh though because I had so much fun last week.

And yes, there is more rain in the forecast.

YESSSSS!

Today has been a quiet day for me.  No one around.  Bread to bake and surf.  So, after the wonderful loaf of cinnamon cardamon swirl bread and two small loafs of cinnamon swirl bread were finished, I went off to the beach.

Me, my board, and the surf.  The wind was blowing so hard that I did not get my windscreen up.  I was planning a bit of reading too but the setup failed with just me.  I actually lost one of my tent stakes.  Not a huge frustration.

I was thinking about it on the way home.  All the little frustrations of the day:  traffic, not getting out of the house as soon as I would have liked, losing a tent stake, were nothing to the joy of standing up today.

YESSSS!  I stood up and rode my board all the way in.  Me and my spoon.  The damage I have done to my body in the last eighteen months means that I have not had enough shoulder strength to actually paddle hard enough and get up fast enough to ride.  Now, there were some things that helped:  fresh wax, more powerful surf, almost sets in Galveston.

But you know what?  I stood!  I stood!  I stood!  The smile on my face was so big that I thought my face was going to split!  Such joy.

I wanted to be in the water longer, but between the wind being so much it was very hard to carry my board, weather coming in, and being hurt from the Oregon coast, I did the wise thing and did not push it.  I may still be taking ibuprofen before bed but I got home safe and sound.  That is always a good end to the day.

I stood!  I stood!  I stood!

fun in water

For a three day weekend, we fit a lot into it.  My Beloved and I took Small Mister out in my boat for the first time.  I have been really wanting to go row but the logistics have been interesting between work schedules, weather, and the small boy.  But, we figured out my boat can go into the Suburban which then means we have a car seat.  Off to rowing we go.

I did not get any pictures but it was hilarious.  Small Mister kept looking at us like "where are you taking that and why is it going in the truck?"  When the boat went into the water, his face was even more concerned.  I thought he was going to fuss when we put him in the boat.  But then Grandpoppa and Grandmomma were there with him. Off we went!  There was much fun to be had.  I would have probably liked to have been out longer but Small Mister got tired.  He also kept me from hurting myself.

On Monday, there was surf.  The whole family went.  The Tall Short Person took this picture.  I held my board while My Beloved help the Small Mister balance.  You would have thought we had given him the world with the smiles and laughter he had.

I realized I need to spend more time on the water.  Either a board or a boat.  It just helps me to relax.   I laughed at myself because I realized I could have my life revolve around rowing, surfing, gardening, baking bread, and growing flowers.  What an odd combination!  There would be tea and books in there as well, with a bit of sewing.  Which reminds me, new surfboard bags with shoulder straps needs to go on the sewing list!
