a hat made from sunshine

On our way to our mountain, it was darn cold!  And the wind was blowing.  We were eating outside most of the time so we could let Small Mister could run.  But the way the wind was blowing and how cold it was, I needed a hat.  I do not know what I was thinking because I know the end of June, beginning of July can be cold as you go north.  When the Tall Short Person was born in July many years ago, we had to run the heater.

I did not bring a hat. I had brought a sweater as just in case.  I had yarn with me, the last of Sunshine that I had spun.  I made a hat.  I wore it on the mountain.  I wore it at my parents on the way back.  I wore it all the way through New Mexico.  We go through the northern high plains and it can be a bit chilly there year round.

I like how it turned out even though it is not perfect.  I am thinking about putting it in my bicycling bag so it is with the sweater I have at work.  That is the one I made from Sunshine's fleece as well.  I have had to pull that one out because of the air conditioning this summer.  That is really how my life works.

power outages

Today I am very thankful for long summer nights, a treadle sewing machine, and relative coolness due to a thunderstorm.

As I left work on my bicycle, a massive thunderstorm started.  I was totally soaked by the time I got home.  Every piece of clothing was wet.  And as I road home, I passed a tree down on power lines two blocks from our city home.  We have not had power, had power, and then not had power again as the lines were being fixed.

I did get some sewing done.  Squares for nine square quilt squares cut and a new slip cut.  Small Mister helped me with a bit of sewing before we went out for dinner.  I have everything I need to cook without power but the whole family was looking for more coolness then we had.  And after cooking over a camp stove for the last ten days, I was very easy about going out.  What I had planned for dinner, needed an oven and I am not sure what I would have cooked on top of the stove.  I would have figured something out.  It is just a bit easier when you are prepared and I was not.

Currently, we have power.  Which is nice.  Who knows what the rest of the night will bring but that is okay.  It is time for sleep.

just needs to be mailed

A friend of ours has been going through a lot of change.  Then, he gave away his most favorite Trader Joe's shopping bag because a ladies paper bag broke.  I decided to make him a new shopping bag.  He is also allergic to wool which means I cannot make him anything fuzzy.

I feel like I have gotten the measurements right on the shopping bags I make.  The pockets took a while.  Now they are just about the right size.

I really love these fabrics, geometric and feathers.  I am working on the squares for a quilt for a small boy and I want to make sure that there are both of these fabrics in that quilt.

I just need to get a flat rate envelope and the bag will be on its way.  Hopefully, it will not be raining at lunch tomorrow and I can do that.

a need

I have a need to be here or some where similar.  All types of difficult are going to start at work next week.

Soon.  Very soon.  But there will not be this much snow.

teaching

The team I work on in the office has three women.  I am included in that three.  The other two have both had surgery recently.  One will have another.  I gave them both shawls I crocheted in the path.  The one who is going to have surgery again is planning on taking it with her on her return to the hospital.

The gifting of the shawls started a whole conversation about yarn and how it was made.  I brought up youtube videos on spinning but this morning I brought in my favorite Turkish spindle and the alpaca fiber the boyos picked out.  It was a quick lesson on how to make yarn because we all had other tasks to do.  Miss B said it looked much easier then it was.  She gave it a try.

Having my spindle and fiber at work is not a very good thing.  It calls to me while it sits in the drawer.
